The Problem

Many young professionals struggle with debt, irregular spending habits, and limited financial guidance. Existing finance apps are usually the problem, not the solution.

They're either glorified spreadsheets that feel like homework or so dumbed-down they're useless. People quit because they're tired of being lectured by a robot. They need more than just static charts โ€” they need actual guidance, empathy, and low-friction daily rituals.

"Target users require a serene, guidance-led interaction model that distills daily capital outflows into actionable insights and habit correction, prioritizing behavior over raw data visualization."

1 Week

Tools

Figma, FigJam, Perplexity, Google Gemini, Sitch AI

Target Users

Young professionals (20sโ€“30s), city dwellers, first-generation earners

User Persona

๐Ÿ‘ค
Rohit Sharma
Age 26 ยท Mumbai ยท Junior Software Engineer

The Situation

Rohit has been working for two years. His salary is growing, but so is his spending. Between food delivery, financing his new phone, and social outings, he's living for that end-of-month paycheck.

Why He Struggles

He doesn't lack the income; he lacks the habit. Every time he's tried a budgeting app, he's quit because the design felt clinical or judgmental. He doesn't need to be scolded for buying an extra coffee โ€” he just needs to know if he can afford it next week.

What He Really Wants

To build a buffer and stop stressing. He needs a quick, nightly ritual โ€” something he can check in 30 seconds that tells him, "Hey, you're good," or "Maybe skip the take-out tonight."

Design Goals

Keep It Simple

Users should get the value instantly, without a steep learning curve. No jargon, no complexity.

Nudge, Don't Preach

Encourage better habits without the nagging, "you failed" vibe. Supportive, not judgmental.

Clear The Clutter

If a dashboard is too noisy, it's useless. Prioritize clean, organized information.

Speed Matters

If a user can't record an expense in five seconds, they won't do it. Speed is non-negotiable.

Earn The Trust

The app must feel professional enough that you'd be comfortable connecting your bank details.

Behavioral Foundation

Interaction models informed by The Psychology of Money, Rich Dad Poor Dad, and Your Money or Your Life.

Key Differentiators

UPI Screenshot Ingestion

AI-driven parsing of UPI transaction screenshots to extract fiscal data and suggest behavioral categories automatically.

Safe-to-Spend Metric

Immediate clarity on daily spendable limits โ€” one number that tells users exactly where they stand.

Evidence-Based Micro-Tips

Behavior and personal finance tips grounded in books like The Psychology of Money and Rich Dad Poor Dad.

Context-Aware AI Coach

Supportive chatbot analyzing actual user spending data to provide personalized financial guidance.

2-Minute Nightly Ritual

Log/confirm expenses, tag 1โ€“2 as unnecessary, get one small insight and one suggested action.

Smart Category Tracking

Automatic sorting of spending into needs and wants, with intuitive data visualization and smart filters.

Design Process

Phase 1 Research & Strategy

Competitive Analysis & User Research

  • Cross-platform analysis of budgeting apps, focusing on dashboard interaction models
  • Grounded product psychology in behavioral finance literature
  • Defined target audience: young professionals (20sโ€“30s) in UPI-first ecosystem
  • Created user persona (Rohit Sharma) based on research synthesis
Phase 2 Information Architecture

User Flows & Wireframing

  • Mapped global navigation: dashboards, transaction ledgers, and budget buckets
  • Defined user sequences from onboarding to recurring nightly reflection loops
  • Created 5 wireframes for key screens (Landing, Dashboard, Transactions, Fixed Expenses)
  • Explored alternative layout configurations for dashboard card hierarchies
Phase 3 Visual Design

High-Fidelity UI Design

  • Established serene, high-fidelity aesthetic with dark theme for premium feel
  • Designed 10 hi-fi screens covering full user journey
  • Built atomic design system: buttons, cards, icons, typography hierarchy
  • Applied soft gradients and rounded elements for friendly user experience
Phase 4 Prototyping

Interactive Prototype

  • Built comprehensive interactive prototype in Figma
  • Connected all screens with realistic user flow transitions
  • Implemented end-to-end journey from landing to insights
  • Optimized for mobile-first interaction patterns
Phase 5 Refinement

Strategic Reflection & Polish

  • Balanced detail with ease of use โ€” showing useful data without overwhelming users
  • Prioritized "Safe-to-Spend" numbers and bill tracking to reduce stress
  • Refined microcopy to align with serene, supportive linguistic identity
  • Validated flows against regional transaction behaviors and best practices

Strategic AI Toolchain

Perplexity

Cross-platform competitive analysis and behavioral trend synthesis within the personal finance ecosystem.

Figma

Engineered the comprehensive UI experience, utilizing atomic design systems and interactive components.

FigJam

Mapped global navigation structures and defined end-to-end user sequences from onboarding to daily reflection.

Sitch AI

Generated alternative layout configurations for dashboard card hierarchies and empty-state variations.

Google Gemini

Brainstormed visual directions and established the serene, high-fidelity aesthetic for the product.

Strategic Guardrails

AI outputs treated as speculative drafts โ€” all flows validated against established regional transaction behaviors.

Design Challenges

1

Balancing Detail with Ease of Use

Challenge

The biggest challenge was showing useful financial data without overwhelming new users. Many apps show complex charts and filters that can be stressful for people just starting out.

Solution

Prioritized "Safe-to-Spend" numbers and bill tracking to reduce stress. This helps users feel safer while keeping detailed tools just a click away if needed.

โœ“ Users feel informed without being overwhelmed
2

Automation vs. User Control

Challenge

There is always a balance between AI doing everything and the user staying in control. Over-automation risks disconnecting users from their money management habits.

Solution

Designed a collaborative system: AI suggests categories and insights, but users confirm and tag their expenses manually during the nightly ritual โ€” keeping them connected to their finances.

โœ“ Users stay connected to their money while benefiting from AI
3

Standing Out in a Crowded Market

Challenge

The budgeting app market is crowded with established players. Differentiating ArthaMint required more than just features โ€” it needed a unique experience philosophy.

Solution

Focused on psychological safety and daily reflection over raw data control. Adopted a serene, supportive tone that diverges from the clinical approach of legacy tools.

โœ“ Unique positioning through behavioral UX design

Key Takeaways

"Diverging from legacy tools that prioritize raw data control, our architecture centers on psychological safety, daily reflection, and supportive growth for first-generation earners."

This project reinforced that great financial UX isn't about more data โ€” it's about the right data at the right time. By focusing on behavioral design principles and emotional safety, ArthaMint creates a space where users feel supported rather than judged.

Design Tool

Figma โ€” Wireframing, Prototyping, Visual Design, Design System

Design Approach

Behavioral UX grounded in finance literature, AI-assisted workflow

Key Insight

Psychological safety and supportive tone outperform data density for first-time budgeters

Future Roadmap

1

Real-World User Testing

Conduct usability testing with actual young professionals to validate design assumptions and refine the experience based on real behavior.

2

Debt Management Tools

Improve tools for paying down debt โ€” simple EMI, credit card, and BNPL tracking with "next step" guidance instead of advanced dashboards.

3

Responsive Design

Make the design work better across all screen sizes, taking ArthaMint from a concept to a fully functional financial hub.
